Flowers for a Canadian Thanksgiving

Flowers for a Canadian Thanksgiving

Anytime family or friends get together to share a meal, there’s always the question about what the guest should bring the host. Sometimes it’s food, or a bottle of something nice. But, so long as you do it properly, sending flowers for Thanksgiving can be a beautiful, meaningful gift.

There are certain things to take into consideration when buying flowers or sending flowers to someone. Perhaps you don’t know very much about flowers yourself, but if you pick up a flower at random without giving care to the type, how it needs to be cared for, or what kind of store it’s from, your gesture won’t stand for very much.

Make sure you go to a reputable source. The store should specialize in flowers. You can tell it’s a specialty store if the clerk can identify the different flowers, knows how much to water them, and if the plants and flowers in the store seem well maintained. If there’s no withering brown leaves on the plants it’s a good sign! Obviously, if the store’s name related to flowers or plants it’s a good place to buy from. Sweetpeas in Roncesvalles village in Toronto is a good new store with knowledgeable staff, but keep these tips in mind when looking for flowers in Canada or anywhere else.

Most people are not flower experts, but you don’t have to be a horticulturalist to select a flower they’ll genuinely enjoy. If you know the person you’re buying for well enough, perhaps you know what colours they like (judging by their clothes, the house’s colour scheme, etc). Consider what room they’ll likely go in and think about a complimentary colour. So long as it’s a really nice flower it’ll likely fit in any room.

Most importantly, you want the flower to last for a considerable time. No matter what any clerk tells you about it being an indoor flower, all flowers love sunlight and water. But some require different amounts of each. When you give the flowers, don’t dwell on a thousand things they need, but casually mention how often to water it. This will also ensure you put considerable thought into the gift.

Naturally, you want to get a beautiful flower with a pleasing aroma. A good thing to do is get the florist to put together a custom batch. This creates a unique mix of colours and smells, and will guarantee it’s not just something they could pick up themselves from the corner store. It’s unnecessary to list common flowers here, but if they look like something you would like to receive from someone else, it’s probably good enough. There should be a price difference between the ones with smaller, less colourful peddles. The price will reflect the quality. Roses have a rich colour and the interweaving peddles are elegant and timeless, and it’s no mistake that they cost more money. The point of the gesture is to get genuinely beautiful flowers, so don’t do it at all if you’re not willing to invest enough money.

Perhaps it’s not the first thing people think about when considering what to offer during Thanksgiving, but keep these flower shopping tips in mind and your host will be most happy.
